United Kingdom: ban on flights to Sharm, Egypt, removed

Four years after the tragedy, connections were restored

Today the United Kingdom has eliminated the ban imposed four years ago for security reasons on connections between Britain and Sharm el Sheikh, in Egypt.

In October 2015, in fact, following the crash of the flight of the former Russian company Metrojet caused by a bomb in the aircraft where 224 passengers lost their lives (see AVIONEWS), Sharm had become a stop off limits for flights from the United Kingdom.

UK Transport Secretary of State Grant Shapps said: "The elimination of restrictions is a first step. The decision is the result of closer cooperation between our aeronautical and Egyptian security specialists". Shapps pointed out the situation will continue to be monitored and that "the safety and security of British citizens remain at the top of the government's priorities".

Unlike the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany had reopened the flights a few weeks after the attack.
