Russia urges the US to declare nuclear war "unacceptable"
Meeting between Russian Foreign Minister and former US Secretary
Today the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has urged the United States to sign a joint declaration that "nuclear war is unacceptable". The position was taken following the Iranian situation described by the diplomat as "very tense" (see AVIONEWS).
At the opening of a meeting with Ernest Moniz, former US Energy Secretary and Managing Director of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (a non-profit organization founded in 2001 to prevent attacks and incidents with weapons of mass destruction), Lavrov complimented on an article that Moniz wrote with former US Senator Sam Nunn, where he stated the unacceptability of nuclear war. The Minister, addressing the CEO, said: "We have offered to our American colleagues to publicly declare that there can be no victory in an atomic war. It would be very interesting for me to know your opinion about this problem, especially considering the fact that you are taking he is part of a non-proliferation conference that began today in Moscow and I intend to visit tomorrow".
Ernest Moniz replied that such an assertion would be vital for the International Community.
