Iran-Russia: new nuclear reactor construction phase
It could be completed in 2027
Iran and Russia began a new phase on Sunday for the construction of the second nuclear reactor in Bushehr, on the Gulf coast. The manufacturing began in 2017 and yesterday Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), and the deputy head of the Russian nuclear company Rosatom, Alexander Lokshin, during a ceremony, paid some cement at the base of the platform which is located about 750 kilometers south of Tehran. A novelty that takes shape in the context of the Iranian decision to move away from the Vienna nuclear agreement of 2015 (see AVIONEWS).
"When these projects are completed in 2027-2028, we will have 3,000 megawatts of electricity generated by nuclear plants", said Salehi.
The Islamic Republic has sought to reduce its dependence on oil and gas through the development of atomic power plants and, in line with the 2015 pact, Moscow has supplied Tehran with the fuel needed for the electricity generating nuclear reactors with the idea that the controversial Iranian program would never have been used for military purposes. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, and imposed new sanctions on Iran that brought the economy of the Islamic country to its knees. In response, Tehran has begun to reduce its commitments.
