Covid-19 does not stop NATO
"Sea Guardian 2020" operation underway in the Mediterranean
NATO has launched the "Sea Guardian 2020" operation involving naval forces from the navies of Greece, Turkey and Italy including three submarines. The forces will conduct patrolling activities with the aim of "detecting suspicious vessels implicated in terrorist actions or the trafficking of migrants". The first activities of the operation were conducted with the "Tcg Büyükada" corvette of the Turkish Navy, which is the second unit of the ASW (AntiSubmarine Warfare) corvettes of the Turkish Navy's Ada class. Special forces of the Turkish Navy were also engaged in this phase, operating on fast boats used for boarding the suspect vessel. A helicopter force operating from land and aboard the Turkish ship also participates in the operation. The transaction is expected to close on April 8th.
In a statement -AVIONEWS unveils it- NATO underlines the fact that "since the beginning of the epidemic, robust measures have been implemented to limit the spread of the virus and minimize the risk for the military and civilians working in the Alliance and also of the communities to which they belong. However -the release continues it- our ability to conduct operations has not been undermined".
