United Airlines' never-ending crisis: more than 16,000 layoffs

Over 16 thousand fewer jobs: this is the employment scenario that is taking shape for the American carrier United Airlines, struggling with the crisis triggered by the coronavirus and intending to lay off many employees. There can be a little bit of optimism, because this is a lower number than was threatened last July, ie 36,000 workers to be sent home. Chicago company is forced to operate at 63% of its capacity and the redundancies are an inevitable consequence of this complicated period, a situation in common with many other airlines (read also the article published by AVIONEWS).
Most of the employees will be forced to leave the company as of October 1st, the same day that the economic support of the US federal government ends. The 16,370 layoffs became public after the publication of an email sent by United Airlines itself to the staff involved. The difference compared to the frightening figures of two months ago is quickly explained: there have been not a few workers who have accepted early retirement packages, voluntary leave, temporary leave and reduced hours, although the coming months will be carefully monitored by unions to avoid new measures of this type as much as possible.
