Alitalia, Brussels approves € 200 million State aid
It's the economic support to compensate coronavirus' damages
Dialogue with Brussels is not simple, but in the last few hours an important opening arrived. Alitalia must convince the European Union with its new industrial plan, in the meantime, however, Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition, approved State aid that Italy intends to grant to the future flag carrier to compensate damages caused by covid-19. This is EUR 199.45 million, a sum of some importance and which Vestager believes is compatible with the legislation governing State aid.
If this economic situation has been overcome without great difficulties, the same cannot be said of the dialogue established on the Newco. In this case, the commissioner fears that there is State aid and the negotiations have soon stalled, forcing the government to pass a new decree to modify the guidelines of the carrier's industrial plan. Also today, on Friday 4 September 2020, Vestager explained how the previous financial support to Alitalia is being investigated and that contacts with Rome are constant. Meanwhile, the Italian Minister of Economic Development Stefano Patuanelli has announced possible news on the company by the end of next week.
