Defence. Greece ready to increase military spending

Hellenic budget could be fivefold

Greece does not want to spare any expenses from a military point of view, as is well evidenced by the latest decisions taken by the Athens government in this area. The Hellenic Nation has experienced a troubled year to say the least as regards relations with neighboring Turkey, consequently for 2021 there will be a completely different defense budget compared to that of the year that is now about to end. Athens' proposal is to increase the budget five times, with an overall expenditure that would thus reach 2.5 billion euros. The increase in question must be linked in particular to the close confrontation with Ankara on gas fields located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean.

That's why Greece is poised to acquire 18 Rafale fighter jets from France, a signature that is expected to be affixed over the course of next week. In addition, there will also be the acquisition of four frigates. The nation has not experienced simple moments from an economic and financial point of view, but the question of defense has always been addressed in a particular way, with a high budget despite the prevailing crisis. Last year alone, for example, military spending exceeded 2% of gross domestic product, a percentage that (in proportion) is only lower than that of the United States and Bulgaria.
