Peru extends flight restrictions to curb Covid Delta variant

Air links with India in particular blocked

Lima government announced in the last few hours that Peru has extended the suspension of commercial air links from several countries, namely India, South Africa and Brazil. The provision will be valid until July 11 to prevent the further spread of Covid-19. The measure, published in the official newspaper "El Peruano", was adopted in recent days after the second case of the Delta variant was discovered in the country, according to local media reports. The executive, which initially adopted a similar measure on May 10, also ordered Peruvians from or through the countries listed above to undergo a 14-day quarantine in their homes. The health ministry reported this month two confirmed cases of the Delta variant in the Arequipa region, which forced the government to declare "extreme alert" to avoid contagion. Health Minister Oscar Ugarte announced on Friday the adoption of an epidemiological cordon around Arequipa, which includes a ban on transport services to and from the region.

Last February, Peru itself approved the creation of a national air carrier. After so many years of dependence on private companies, Lima has gone in a very specific direction in a historical period in which such a thing seems crazy and unthinkable given the very low volumes of air traffic. The vote of the Peruvian congress took place almost unanimously, with only one "no" to be precise.
