China, Chengdu-Tianfu airport begins operations

It will handle an annual flow of 60 million passengers

Yesterday, Sunday June 27, 2021, the Chengdu-Tianfu International Airport officially began its commercial operations, a highly anticipated moment for the Chinese air transport sector (read also the article published by AVIONEWS). The airport in question is located in the province of Sichuan, more precisely in the southwestern area of the Asian Nation.

The first flight ever was operated by the local air carrier Sichuan Airlines which reached the capital, Beijing. The hub is located about 50 kilometers from the center of the Chinese city, as well as being the largest civil transport airport built as part of the former celestial empire's thirteenth five-year plan, the one that takes into account the period between 2016 and 2020. In addition, it is the second largest international airport in Chengdu. The economic investment was by no means indifferent, as can be easily imagined. We are talking about 75 billion yuan, the equivalent of nearly 12 billion dollars, for the first phase of construction. It was decided to equip the airport with two terminals capable of covering a total area of 710 thousand square meters, while the flow of passengers to be handled each year amounts to 60 million people, as if to say that the whole of Italy would pass through these leave within twelve months. The goal, however, is to make even better in this sense, with 120 million annual passengers in the not too distant future.
