EU, Vestager: "We support Italian Government on Alitalia tickets"
A solution must be found for flights of the old company
The European Commissioner for Competition and Executive Vice President of the EU Commission, Margrethe Vestager, has returned to talk in the last few hours on the issue relating to the air carrier Alitalia.
According to Vestager, Brussels is supporting the efforts made by the Italian government with strength and conviction, in particular with regard to tickets already purchased for flights of the company under extraordinary administration. Those who bought tickets of this type could see their departure canceled, as the debut of the Newco is getting closer and closer and the EU wants at all costs the discontinuity between the old and the new airline. The Commissioner stressed that this scenario must be avoided in every way, for example with economic compensation.
Vestager answered a very specific question on the subject during a press conference held in Brussels today, Thursday 8 July 2021. The commissioner then added: "The ticket issue must be considered separately from the State aid issue, Alitalia and the new ITA company. I think it's really important that people can count on getting a refund, a voucher, a re-booking of their tickets. I fully support the efforts of the Italian Government to ensure that people, in one way or another, are rewarded for not being able to fly. I think it is really important for the trust in the whole industry”. Over the next few weeks there may be more precise indications on what passengers will have to do at this point.
