Biden confirms US troops withdrawal from Iraq by the end of 2021
During a summit with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi
American President Joe Biden has made it known in the last few hours how the United States combat mission in Iraq will end by the end of this 2021, consequently the withdrawal of the stars and stripes troops will soon proceed.
Yesterday, July 26, 2021, the tenant of the White House met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in Washington and this exit strategy was made official. This is the umpteenth American step towards the end of the main military commitments that followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, as the US armed forces will gradually abandon Afghanistan as well. The US mission in Iraq will be very different in the coming months. As Biden pointed out, the role will be to provide assistance, aid, training and more to counter the advance of ISIS. The president then released some optimistic statements for the future: “We support the strengthening of Iraqi democracy and look forward to making sure the elections go ahead in October. And we are also engaged in our security cooperation, in our shared fight against ISIS. It is fundamental for the stability of the region and our cooperation against terrorism will continue, even if we move on to this new phase that we will talk about”.
Even in the last months of the Trump presidency there was much talk of these topics and above all of the withdrawal of troops, made necessary decades after the events that made the American military presence in these places mandatory.
