Final agreement to expand Barcelona Airport

Total economic investment of almost 2 billion

Government has decided that the “Josep Tarradellas” Barcelona-El Prat airport will be expanded in the coming months, a project that has been talked about for some time (read also the article published by AVIONEWS).

The executive formalized yesterday, on Monday August 2, 2021, the agreement with the Generalities of Catalonia, the administrative-institutional system of this autonomous community. Going into more detail, the new dimensions of the Catalan airport provide for an overall economic investment of almost 2 billion euros (1.7 to be precise).

Isabel Rodriguez, minister of territorial policies, wanted to release some statements on the matter to reassure public opinion. In particular, the owner of the dicastery explained how Barcelona airport will become an international hub to all intents and purposes. The government plan is to expand the airport, but it has created several internal tensions, as different political forces that govern Barcelona have opposed themselves from the first moment.

This infrastructure is located in El Prat de Llobregat, 10 kilometers southwest of the center of Barcelona. Its official inauguration dates back to 1916, without forgetting the current 1,300 hectares of overall size which will obviously increase over the next few months. Since December 2018 it has been named after Josep Tarradellas i Joan, supporter of the independence of Catalonia in 1936 and president, from 1954 to 1980, of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Among other things, this is the reference airport for one of the main airlines in Spain, the low-cost Vueling.
