The 2022 will be important for Indian aviation

The spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus will have a strongly negative impact, despite the government's countermeasures, on the Indian air transport sector, which in 2021 showed very encouraging signs of recovery. According to data from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), in the past year companies reached 90% of the operations recorded in the period prior to the health crisis. However, India is showing a stronger recovery trend than possible further blockages.

The 2022 could be the key point for the country. This is also confirmed by the report India Airline Outlook 2022 by the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation (Capa), which estimates an increase of 52% in domestic air traffic and 60% in international air traffic in 2022. In addition, decisive events will happen: the proven company Tata Sons will take control of the national airline Air India; Jet Airways resumes operations; perhaps Akasa Air will finally take off. 

To return to 2019 levels, in addition to government initiatives, there will need to be private investment and the opening of regional airports. Suffice it to say that a major growth driver for the aviation industry in recent years has been the Udan (UdeDesh ka Aam Nagrik) local link network, which has made underserved airports accessible to the masses: now the government has set a goal of upgrading 100 new underserved airports by 2025. In addition, the executive has urged territories to reduce airport taxes to boost the sector.
