Ukraine crisis: American soldiers in Poland

Warsaw says another 1,700 military personnel will arrive soon

A military transport plane carrying the first contingent of US soldiers landed at Jasionka airport in southern Poland. The transfer of the men was decided by the Biden administration in recent days. A measure established to reassure the allies, worried about the tensions on the border between Russia and Ukraine. In the meantime, Warsaw announced that in the next few days it will start sending weapons to Kiev: including mortars and portable anti-aircraft defence systems.

The Polish media reported this, citing the words of the army spokesman, Major Przemyslaw Lipczynski, who said that "the bulk of the American contingent of 1,700 soldiers will arrive shortly". These are the men of the 82nd Airborne Division. Another 300 soldiers of the 18th Airborne Corps will be stationed in Germany. From the latter country, however, 1,000 troops of the "Stryker" infantry squadron will be moved to Romania.
