Extraordinary EU session on Ukraine crisis

Four goals to limit Russian influence. Zelensky speaks

An extraordinary plenary session is being held right now at the European Parliament. Opening the meeting is newly elected President Roberta Metsola, who said, "Our way of life is worth defending. It is worth a cost. For the next generation, for all those in Ukraine and around the world who believe in Europe. For all those who want to be free.

The politician highlighted four goals. First, Europe can no longer continue to depend on Kremlin gas. "We need to re-double our efforts to diversify our energy systems towards a Europe that is no longer at the behest of autocrats. This will put our energy security on stronger footing".

Second, Europe can no longer accommodate Kremlin cash: "Putin’s oligarchs and those who bankroll him should no longer be able to use their purchasing power to hide behind a veneer of respectability, in our cities, communities or our sports clubs".

Third. We need to focus more on our defense: "Europe must move to have a real security and defence Union. We have shown the last week that it is possible and desirable, and more than anything itis necessary". Finally, it is necessary to fight the Russian disinformation campaign. "I call on social media and tech conglomerates to take their responsibility seriously and to understand that there is no being neutral between the fire and the fire brigade".

This was followed by statements from Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky: "I am pleased by what I have seen and heard. This sense of unity among all European countries. For me it is a huge tragedy, we are paying a very high price: after two revolutions now also a war. I don't have the time to read newspapers anymore because I have to take care of people's lives. Ukrainians are an incredible people".

"The direction we want to go -he adds- is to join you. I want you to accept Kiev's request to join the European Union. Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom. We face this situation to become a fair member of the European Union. We have shown that we are strong even in unfavorable conditions. Without you we will be a more lonely country".
