The new airport in Mexico City
Amidst controversy and political promises: Obrador's president is all about the structure
Today the inauguration in Mexico of the new "Felipe Ángeles" airport in Mexico City, located about 40 km from the city center. There are those who are already turning up their noses. Some industry experts point out that the air terminal is located in an isolated area, with no access infrastructure and no commercial incentives from the government. Moreover, the only international flight will be operated by Venezuelan airline Conviasa to Caracas.
Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is trying to appease skeptics. The politician said he has spoken with the top management of the US airline Delta Air Lines, which owns a stake in Aeromexico, which would be considering adding international connections. In addition, the politician promises that a rail link to Mexico City will be ready in 2023.
National media estimate that the building will eventually cost about 5.6 billion dollars. It took 2 and a half years for its construction. To make it happen, the president blocked a large project already underway on another airport. However, businessmen and economists argue, the decision to focus on a medium-sized airport network will continue to dampen the territory's economic growth.
