NATO Extraordinary Council begins

Stoltenberg: "We have a responsibility to ensure that the conflict does not spread beyond Ukraine"

The extraordinary council of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is being held in Evere, on the northeastern outskirts of Brussels. World political leaders, including US President Joe Biden, are talking about relations with Russia, support for Ukraine and strengthening deterrence and defense tools.

Allies "are providing many different types of aid" to Ukraine, but "we have also made it clear that we will not be sending soldiers on the ground, nor aircraft into the skies" of the country invaded by Russia. NATO has a "responsibility" to ensure that the conflict "does not spread beyond Ukraine". In addition, "any use of chemical weapons would radically change the nature of the conflict", said the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, shortly before the start of the extraordinary council.

Meanwhile, NATO's top leaders announced the deployment of new battalions to Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. "I expect the leaders to agree to accelerate the implementation of the commitment made to invest more in defense", concluded Stoltenberg, who asks Beijing "to condemn the invasion" of Ukraine and "not to give political and military support" to Russia.
