Tomorrow the most sustainable ITA Airways flight ever

It will take off from Rome-Fiumicino to Amsterdam-Schiphol

ITA Airways is operating its first flight in The Sustainable Flight Challenge presented by SkyTeam. It will be the AZ 110 departing from Rome-Fiumicino tomorrow May 7 at 2:05 pm and landing in Amsterdam-Schiphol at 4:35 pm.

This is the first of two flights that the Company has been organizing to take part in The Sustainable Flight Challenge, the international competition presented by SkyTeam. The AZ 110 will be operated with an A-320 and will offer the most sustainable flight experience ever on an ITA Airways medium haul route.

Tomorrow’s flight will be followed by a second one, the AZ 608, which will be operated on May 14 on the intercontinental Rome-New York route with an A-330 departing at 10:15 am from Fiumicino and landing in New York-"JFK" at 2:00 pm local time.

SkyTeam's Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) is designed to challenge the aviation industry by stimulating and accelerating innovation and change towards a more sustainable future and the decarbonization of the skies.

It centers around a friendly competition, scheduled between 1-14 May 2022 in which the 16 participating airlines will implement their solutions to operate specific flights in experimental mode, testing a series of initiatives to further reduce aviation’s impact on the environment with the hope of transforming them in best practices for the future of the industry through the involvement of operators and customers.

In order to carry out this experimental operation in the most sustainable way, the Italian carrier has developed and integrated a series of ‘extraordinary’ activities into its usual operating procedures, in coordination with all the departments involved in the project. With the objective of improving efficiency and reducing the environmental impact, these activities included flight and ground operations, the choice of the aircraft and alternative fuels, a sustainable catering, waste recycling, a dedicated passenger experience plus the digital newsstand service and carbon offsetting.

In fact, both flights will have zero impact on the environment in terms of fuel emissions, neutralizing them courtesy of ITA Airways' contribution to some reforestation projects in Africa and South America.

Sustainability is one of the pillars of airline strategy from the first day of its activity and it is pursued also through the renewal of the fleet, which includes new generation aircraft with lower environmental impact.

The Company thanks all the partners involved -ENAV (Italian Flight Assistance Company), Aeroporti di Roma and Eni- for their effective collaboration in the completion of this project.
