EU-NATO task-force on cybersecurity

The aim is to protect States and institutions from Russian cyber attacks and propaganda

The European Union is activating task-forces to protect member States and their institutions from cyber attacks and Russian propaganda on the Internet, which launched an unprecedented disinformation campaign during the war. In order to achieve this goal, Brussels works in close contact with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

To cope with Russian disinformation since 2014, the year of the war in Crimea and Donbass, the European Union has deployed a task-force called "East stratcom" that collaborates with international bodies. It is a platform that coordinates the various national nodes and to date has recorded 13,831 cases of pro-Russian disinformation. Since February 24, 2022, with the invasion of Moscow's Army in Ukraine, the European "Cyber Rapid Response Teams and Mutual Assistance in Cyber security" (Crrts) has also been active, offering a unified response to enemy cyber attacks.

Now, thanks to a political agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council on April 23, 2022 on the Digital Aervices Act, the European Commission has acquired competencies to request economic sanctions against web platforms that allow the dissemination of false information. All elements that Brussels considers to be at the root of the processes that undermine democracy on the Old Continent.
