Ukrainian conflict: the Italian plan for peace

Ceasefire, possible Ukrainian neutrality, territorial issues, international security

A ceasefire, possible Ukrainian neutrality within the Atlantic Alliance, territorial issues in Crimea and Donbass, and a new European and international security agreement. This is the Italian Government's plan for peace presented in recent days by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"If it is true that war is the failure of diplomacy, it is also true that it is diplomacy that can put an end to wars. All of them end sooner or later and we need to be ready with plans for the aftermath of war". The goal is to find "a just, fair, mutually agreed solution based on Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity", the head of the Foreign Ministry said in recent hours.

A diplomatic breakthrough by which Rome, making its own the French position, relaunches the European Union's protagonism on internal issues of global scope, while remaining in the rut of the Atlantic bloc. So, working first on peace, firmly condemning Russia but avoiding its humiliation. Then supporting economic sanctions against the Kremlin, Ukrainian self-defense and providing arms, financial and humanitarian assistance.
