Japan faces off on rearmament

Topic at center of campaign for July 10 vote

To increase or not to increase the budget for military spending? It is one of the issues that characterizes the election campaign for the renewal of Japan's upper house of parliament to be held on July 10. In favor of rearmament are influential political and military figures on the island, who speak of a "geopolitical challenge" for Tokyo.

"Japan needs to increase its defense budget, starting with increasing the stockpile of ammunition and components, aspects that have been neglected in recent years and that from now on, given also the scenario caused by the war in Ukraine, will have to be the central concern for any government force", said former Chief of Staff of the Self-Defense Forces Ryoichi Oriki.

"Given the geographical proximity to China, North Korea and Russia, Japan suffers from a very strong climate of danger and instability", the military said at a press conference, supporting the agenda govenrmente promoted by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
