Collins Aerospace at the "Farnborough Airshow": hybrid propulsion

First helicopter systems with electric motors unveiled

The "Farnborough International Airshow", an event being held in the spaces of the British airport of the same name until July 22, is an occasion for brands to present new systems to the market, announcing new models, illustrating studies, and attending the airshow with stands, helicopters and aircraft on display.

Against this backdrop, US-based Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies, unveiled its first prototype of a 1-MW electric motor technology system that can be equipped by the new hybrid demonstrator helicopter being developed by Pratt & Whitney. Testing is expected in 2024 in Canada.

The new Raytheon Pavilion C631 electric motor is on display at Farnborough. After conducting initial testing with the University of Nottingham, Collins will continue development of electric engines. Raytheon, Collins, and Pratt & Whitney companies are already collaborating on a project on hybrid-electric propulsion, funded by the administrations of Canada and Quebec, on a De Havilland Dash 8/100 turboprop aircraft in collaboration with battery specialist H-55.
