More than 25,000 flights canceled in August

Emergency mainly affects Europe with disruptions on 60 percent of scheduled air travel

With demand for air travel peaking in the summer season, some chickens come home to roost: despite the measures taken in June and July by airlines and airport operators, with pre-emptive hiring and cancellations, the inconveniences and delays are not over. As a result, more than 25,000 airline connections scheduled for August will be canceled worldwide.

Among the airlines leading the world rankings by number of cancellations in August are Turkish Airlines (4400 flights), in second place British Airways (3600 connections), then Lufthansa (nearly 2000 connections) and Hungarian low-cost Wizz Air (about 1300 flights). Most of the routes canceled from July 1 to 15 were operated in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and Denmark. This is according to monitoring by travel platform Mabrian. Trend that could be confirmed in August.

The emergency mainly affects Europe and inconveniences hit 60 percent of planned trips. Among the main causes is the lack of operators to handle the large number of passengers waiting at airports, so the few remaining are working in uncomfortable conditions, promoting strikes that further increase the disruption. Suffice it to say that lost luggage on flights from the United States in April was up 67 percent compared to the same month in 2021.
