Ignazio La Russa elected President of the Italian Senate

"We do not talk about 'all at once', but we are not afraid of reforms, we must implement them together"

The new president of the Italian Senate has been elected: he is Ignazio La Russa (FdI). The seat of the second highest office in the state was entrusted to him at the end of the following vote: 186 out of a total of 187 senators present voted. To give him the necessary support were 116 parliamentarians (majority 104 votes), with 66 ballots white and two votes each to Liliana Segre and Roberto Calderoli (Lega). No agreement for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies.

This is the inauguration speech of the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa: "Even in this legislature we expect and we will talk about reforms. We must not talk about 'everything immediately', but above all we must not fear them. We must try to implement them together. And the Senate may be responsible for the need to update, not the first part which is intangible, but that part of the Constitution that gives more capacity to give answers to citizens and to belong to the will of the people". I believe "that the Senate can do it, in various ways: the important thing is that there is political will to carry out these reforms".

"Mine is a duty of service -he added- I don't have to look for applause today, I don't have to say bombastic words or pick up your benevolence. we need words that arouse applause, but only a sincere promise: I will try with all my strength to be everyone's president".

"I wanted to pay homage -concluded La Russa- not proforma but from the heart, to bring flowers to Senator for life Segre who spoke of three dates I don't want to run away from: April 25, May 1 and June 2. I would like to add the date of birth of the Kingdom of Italy which sooner or later will have to become a national holiday. These dates all together must be celebrated by everyone because only a cohesive and united Italy is the best precondition for facing any emergency and criticality".

Meanwhile, it seems that the election of the president of the Senate has brought out the first cracks within the center-right coalition. In fact, only two votes came from Forza Italia for La Russa (from Elisabetta Casellati and Silvio Berlusconi ), while 16 forced senators did not vote.

Ignazio Benito Maria La Russa was born in Paternò, Sicily, on 18 July 1947. He has been a member of parliament since 1992, first in the Chamber of Deputies and since 2018 in the Senate of the Republic. He played in the Italian Social Movement-National Right from an early age, then moved to the National Alliance, in 2009 he joined the Popolo della Libertà (Pdl), and then founded Fratelli d'Italia in 2012. He was Minister of Defense (2008- 2011) in the Berlusconi IV government, vice president of the Chamber (1994-1996) and vice president of the Senate (2018-2022).
