Germany doubled air passengers in 2022

It is a record for cargo transport with an increase compared to the pre-pandemic period

In these hours, the German federal statistical institute, Destatis, has communicated the official data on the volume of passengers transiting through the main airports of Germany during 2022. According to the results, travellers have more than doubled compared to last year: they were around 155.2 million, an increase of +111.0% compared to 2021. Meanwhile, it is a historic record for cargo transport.

The data analyzed by the institute is the result of the monitoring of people embarked or disembarked in 23 German airports. The excellent performance recorded in 2022 is underlined by the fact that 2021 was the year most affected by the covid pandemic in Germany.

Despite this good test, the total number of passengers registered in German airports is still much lower than in the period before the pandemic: the volume of transits is still -31.5% lower than the 226.7 million in 2019, when major airports set historic records for air passengers.

As far as cargo transport is concerned: 4.9 million tons of air cargo were transported in the main German airports in 2022. In this case, last year's performance marks a +6.7% compared to 2021 (5.3 million tons ), recording a significant increase of +5.2% also compared to the period preceding the pandemic: 4.7 million tons were transported in 2019.
