Malpensa Airport: new security system arrives

Device at the baggage checkpoint halves waiting times

A latest generation EDS-CB (Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage) safety system installed in T1 of Milan-Malpensa airport. The new smart security device, located at the baggage checkpoint, is able to identify potentially explosive substances without isolating the liquids inside the suitcases, thanks to automatic recognition with high-resolution 3D images.

"We installed the Smart Security machines with the restyling of Linate. It was an important investment, carried out during the covid period, the toughest crisis that has hit air transport. The results we record are a reason for satisfaction but above all an incentive to continue on the path of research for increasingly high-performance advanced solutions that technology makes available to us", declares Armando Brunini, CEO of the Milanese airport operator SEA.

The system had already been installed at Malpensa airport, where the greater production capacity of the EDS-CB systems made it possible in the summer of 2022 to control the same number of passengers as in 2019, but with fewer airport workers, fired or early retired during the pandemic, with a 50% reduction in waiting times (from 125 to 250 travellers checked every hour).
