Sudan: Merowe airport under control

The army communicates it; at least 270 victims and 2,600 wounded in clashes with the rebels

At least 270 victims and more than 2,600 injured. This is the balance of Sudan clashes between the regular Army of Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). It was communicated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Meanwhile, despite the pressure from the United States and Saudi Arabia (Arab League) for an immediate ceasefire, this morning the 24-hour truce (agreed yesterday) between the parties, which have been in conflict for five days, was interrupted.

Yesterday afternoon the commander of the Sudanese armed forces, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced on live television that the regular army would respect the proposal to extend the truce for another 24 hours until 6:00pm of today. The international media report firefights in the capital Khartoum: near the Army headquarters and the presidential palace, but also near RSF bases north and west of the capital.

The regular Army of Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF) said it regained full control of Merowe airport today, in the northern part of the country. The airport had been occupied on Saturday by the rebels of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who would now be forced to retreat towards the city of Al-Multaqa, 100 km away.
