ITA Airways-Lufthansa: point of negotiation

The expiry terms on the agreement with the MEF have been extended to 12 May 2023

The deadlines have been extended to 12 May 2023 (they were set for 24 April) within which to reach an agreement on the exclusive negotiation between the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (Mef) and the German airline Lufthansa, for the privatization of the air carrier ITA Airways flag. According to rumors, the parties are perfecting some details of the draft of the agreement, smoothing out the distances on the price.

According to the Italian newspaper "Il Corriere della Sera", which cites government sources, the first phase of the privatization foresees the entry of the Lufthansa airline into the capital of ITA Airways with 200-250 million Euros for the acquisition of a share equal to 40%. In a second phase, the Germans will aim for the Italian company to achieve a balanced budget.

Finally, the third phase. The Germans will aim to acquire the majority of the Italian company: it is estimated in 2025-2026. The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance will therefore want to enhance its stake (60% for around 600 million euros) before the sale: the Italian airline expects to reach 4 billion in revenues in 2027, a profitability in line with that of the Lufthansa Group, a total value of ITA Airways between 900 million and 1.1 billion euros.
