BOEING TO LAY OFF 400 CALIF. WORKERS

PALMDALE, CALIFORNIA, Boeing Co. plans to lay off, begin in January or February, about 400 workers, or 44 percent of its Palmdale work force, beginning next month as $9 million in modification work ends on the space shuttle Columbia. Columbia is the oldest orbiter in NASA's four-shuttle fleet. It arrived at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale for modifications in September 1999.
